These nice folks appear to be missing the point. Sweet slogans about racial tunnel-vision are simply off-target; kind of like going to a football game and staying in the parking lot. What is wrong with love that acknowledges and honors racial and cultural difference? We humans could see our differences even as we celebrate our shared humanity. Like a shark wearing a honorary green sea turtle badge as they eat one, it sucks when an Anglo chooses "human over race" as they benefit daily from White skin.
Self described black, lesbian, feminist author/activist Audrey Lorde once wrote, "The master's tools with never dismantle the master's house." America as our cultural master was built on capitalism, competition, colonialism, and the exploitation of cheap human labor and natural resources by men who were slave and property owners fresh out of colonial Europe. Using the tools our fore fathers gave us will never be successful in eradicating racism. Racism helped found our great nation.
We can only dismantle racism by using tools American masters never dreamed of - sharing, collaboration, connection, and acknowledging difference with respect and equality. Lorde says, "Divide and conquer…must become define and empower."
Equal exchange among varied cultures, races, sexes, economic incomes, genders, religions is America's hope. It is by exchanging with cultures that value nature's systems of interdependence, balance, and cyclical thinking that Americans will build new kinds of cultural houses.
My Caucasian brothers and sisters should start seeing colors. Acknowledging, loving, and empowering equality-based difference among all Americans is our strongest tool.
